During the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week at the Atlantic Hotel, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Madam Fatmata Kargbo, delivered a compelling speech to commemorate the occasion. Expressing her deep honor, Madam Kargbo addressed the audience, joining the global community in recognizing the significance of this year’s theme: “Breastfeeding Support for All.”

Madam Kargbo emphasized that the theme aligns with the national commitment to promoting health, equity, and economic development. She highlighted the essential role of breastfeeding in child health and development, noting its numerous nutritional benefits, its ability to strengthen the immune system, and its contribution to fostering a special bond between mother and child.

The Deputy Minister referenced recommendations from the World Health Organization and UNICEF, advocating for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods up to two years or beyond. She stressed the importance of this practice for the healthy growth and cognitive development of children.

Furthermore, Madam Kargbo discussed the economic implications of breastfeeding, pointing out that it reduces healthcare costs by preventing illnesses and malnutrition. Healthier children contribute to a healthier workforce, which in turn boosts productivity and fosters economic growth. She underscored the importance of breastfeeding support for women in trade, particularly those engaged in Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), enhancing their productivity and well-being.

In Sierra Leone, women play a significant role in the trade sector, particularly in markets and small businesses. By closing the gap in breastfeeding support, these women can balance their economic activities with family responsibilities, ultimately improving their quality of life and business potential.The Ministry of Trade and Industry, under the leadership of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, is committed to promoting breastfeeding as a national priority aligned with the Big Five Agenda. Madam Kargbo outlined initiatives to raise awareness and provide necessary resources for mothers to successfully breastfeed, ensuring that both mothers and children thrive
