The Executive Director of the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA), Mr. Thomas Faya Kamara, along with his deputy, Mr. Dwight Sheriff, and their team, conducted a raid on the mining area around Lake Sonfon in Koinadugu District, Diang Chiefdom, in an effort to put an end to illegal mining activities threatening this national protected area.

The NPAA is tasked with safeguarding all ecosystems within its jurisdiction, and the decision to target Lake Sonfon was motivated by its significance to His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, who is deeply passionate about environmental conservation. The illegal mining activities posed a serious threat to the lake’s survival, prompting urgent action from the NPAA.

Lake Sonfon is a crucial protected area that hosts a diverse array of wildlife, including crocodiles, fish, crabs, and other iconic species that attract tourists. The ongoing mining activities were identified as detrimental to the environment, necessitating immediate cessation.

Following the NPAA’s intervention, all mining operations in and around Lake Sonfon have been suspended. This decisive action aligns with the President’s commitment to preserving biodiversity and promoting environmental conservation.
