The campaign, which commenced this week, focuses on structures built in high-risk zones such as flood plains, unstable hillsides, and areas prone to landslides. At the launch of the campaign, Minister of Lands, Mr. Ibrahim M. Jalloh, emphasized the importance of taking immediate action to protect communities. “We cannot afford to wait for another disaster to strike before we act. Our priority is to ensure the safety of our citizens, and this demolition campaign is a crucial step in that direction,” he stated.
The Ministry has enlisted the support of local government officials, community leaders, and law enforcement agencies to carry out the demolitions. Residents in affected areas have been informed in advance, and efforts have been made to provide alternative housing solutions for those displaced by the demolitions.
Local residents expressed mixed reactions to the campaign. While many understand the need for safety measures, some have voiced concerns over the loss of their homes and livelihoods. “I know it’s for our safety, but where will we go?” lamented Mary Kanu, a mother of three whose home sits on a hillside vulnerable to landslides. “We need more support to find new places to live.”
In response to these concerns, the Ministry has promised to work closely with community organizations to facilitate the relocation process and provide necessary assistance to those affected by the demolitions.
The campaign has also sparked discussions about the need for better urban planning and development policies in Sierra Leone. Experts argue that more stringent regulations on construction in disaster-prone areas are essential to prevent future risks.
